Academy of Model Aeronautics

Supporting Safe, Responsible Model Aviation

Tri-County R/C Club is proud to be sanctioned by the Academy of Model Aeronautics, commonly known as the AMA.

Founded in 1936, the AMA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting, developing, educating, and advancing model aviation. It supports pilots, clubs, flying sites, competitions, educational programs, and the continued growth of the hobby throughout the United States.

Why AMA Membership Matters

AMA membership connects model aviation enthusiasts with a nationwide community of pilots, builders, instructors, clubs, and volunteers.

Depending on the membership selected, AMA benefits may include:

  • Personal liability and accident-related insurance benefits
  • Model aviation safety guidelines and educational resources
  • Access to AMA-chartered clubs and flying sites
  • Model Aviation magazine and digital publications
  • Member programs, competitions, events, and awards
  • Advocacy for model aviation at the local and national levels
  • Resources for beginners, instructors, clubs, and experienced pilots

Current membership options, prices, and benefit details are available directly from the AMA.

AMA Membership and Tri-County R/C Club

Current AMA membership is required to become a flying member of Tri-County R/C Club.

AMA membership helps ensure that our pilots share a commitment to responsible operation, established safety practices, and the continued protection of model aviation. Members are expected to follow the AMA Safety Code, Tri-County R/C Club field rules, and all applicable FAA requirements.

Before You Fly

AMA membership and FAA requirements are separate. Recreational model aircraft pilots are responsible for meeting all applicable federal requirements.

Before flying, recreational pilots should:

  • Complete the Recreational UAS Safety Test, known as TRUST
  • Carry proof of TRUST completion while flying
  • Maintain current FAA registration when registration is required
  • Properly mark registered aircraft
  • Follow AMA safety guidelines and club field rules

The AMA is an FAA-approved TRUST Test Administrator and provides the test online at no charge.

New to Model Aviation?

The AMA provides resources for people of all ages and experience levels. Whether you are selecting your first aircraft, learning to fly, improving your building skills, or returning to the hobby after many years, the AMA and Tri-County R/C Club can help you get started safely.

Our experienced club members are happy to answer questions, explain field procedures, and help new pilots learn the fundamentals of radio-controlled flight.

Fly Safely. Fly Responsibly. Enjoy the Hobby.

Membership in the AMA helps support flying sites, safety programs, educational resources, and advocacy efforts that keep model aviation strong.

Join the AMA, become part of Tri-County R/C Club, and enjoy the friendship, craftsmanship, learning, and excitement that make radio-controlled aviation such a rewarding hobby.
